Anderson, Daniel

Year: 1928

Daniel Anderson was born on September 3, 1874, in Fluvanna County, Virginia, the son of Rosanna Anderson and Kettrell Anderson. Like many Virginians of his generation, Daniel eventually made his way to Roanoke, where opportunity and labor were closely tied to the rise of the railroad.

Around 1892, he married Eveline, and together they built a family of seven children. The Anderson family lived at 133 Ninth Avenue, in a neighborhood shaped by working families whose daily lives were bound up with the growth of the city.

Daniel worked for the Norfolk & Western Railway as a coal vender, one of the many laborers whose work supported the railroad economy that defined Roanoke in the early twentieth century. Though such jobs rarely drew public attention, they were essential to the functioning of the railroad and the life of the city itself.

He died on February 15, 1928, from cardiac and renal failure. He was fifty-three years old. His life stands as part of the larger story of the families, workers, and community members whose labor and presence helped build Roanoke.
