Year: 1922
Arthur Carter was born on January 1, 1921, to Robert Carter and Carrie Witcher Carter.
The family lived at 119 Rutherford Avenue NW in Roanoke, where Robert worked as a driver.
Arthur died on June 6, 1922, at just one year old. The cause of death was listed as
cholera infantum, a severe gastrointestinal illness that claimed the lives of many
young children in the early twentieth century, particularly during warmer months
when sanitation and refrigeration were limited.
Records place Arthur among those buried at Old Lick Cemetery. Like many graves from
that site, his burial was likely affected by the 1961 disinterments associated with
the construction of Interstate 581, and his remains may have been moved to Coyner Springs.
