Garland, Jane Rose

Year: 1912

Jane Rose Garland was born around 1819 in Amherst County, Virginia, the daughter of Linsey Rose, who was born in Nelson County, and Sallie Turner of Amherst County. Little is known about her early life, but she lived through an extraordinary period of American history, witnessing nearly a century of change.

By the early twentieth century, Jane was living in Roanoke at 211 Ninth Avenue NW. She worked as a housekeeper, a common occupation for many women of her generation who supported themselves and their families through domestic labor.

Jane Rose Garland died on November 5, 1912, at the age of ninety-three. Her death certificate lists the cause simply as old age, marking the passing of a woman whose life stretched from the early nineteenth century into the modern industrial era.

Though the historical record preserves only fragments of her story, Jane’s long life reflects the endurance and resilience of the many women whose quiet labor helped sustain their families and communities through decades of profound change.
