Vernon Hackley was born on October 8, 1884, the son of Lewis and Eliza Hackley. By 1930, he was living with his wife, Mary, at 18 Lynchburg Avenue NE, where he worked as a waiter for the Norfolk and Western Railroad.
He registered for the World War I draft, though no record of active service has been found. Vernon Hackley died on March 27, 1930, from heart and kidney failure at the age of 45. His life reflects the steady labor of those who supported the region’s rail industry and daily life through service work.
