Linwood William Irby Jr. was born on May 31, 1933, the son of Linwood William Irby, a truck driver for the Norfolk and Western Railroad from Java, Virginia, and Nancy Lee Pindexter of Rocky Mount. The family lived at 225 Gregory Avenue NE.
He died on September 26, 1933, from influenza at just four months old. His short life reflects the vulnerability of infants in an era when even common illnesses could prove fatal.
