Year: 1928
Wendell Canty Neal was born on July 22, 1927, in Roanoke, Virginia, to C. Brook Neal and Mayo Barlow Neal. His father worked as a barber at the Antiseptic Barber Shop, while his mother, a former teacher at Gainsboro School, had left the profession after her marriage. Wendell entered a household shaped by steady work and education, a young family building its life in the Gainsboro community. His life was heartbreakingly brief. Wendell passed away on January 9, 1928, at just five months old, after developing bronchial pneumonia following what was likely an ordinary cold. His death reflects the vulnerability of infants in an era before modern antibiotics, when even common illnesses could turn quickly and prove fatal. Though his time was short, he remains part of the record of a family and a neighborhood whose stories continue to be remembered.
