Oatneal, Infant

Year: 1927

Baby Oatneal was born and died on April 10, 1927, in Roanoke, Virginia, the child of Luther Day Oatneal and Sara Bell Oatneal, both originally from Salem. Luther worked as a domestic servant, likely in the role of a butler or valet, providing for his young family.

The infant’s death was attributed to prematurity, a condition that, in this era, often proved insurmountable. Just two months later, in June 1927, Luther and Sara formalized their marriage, and they would go on to have two daughters, Betty and Sara. The family’s time together, however, was marked by further hardship, as Sara later died from acute glomerulonephritis, with records also noting typhoid fever as a contributing or alternate cause. Though Baby Oatneal’s life lasted only a single day, he remains part of a family story shaped by resilience in the face of profound loss.
